Updates for Australia and International Space Sectors

Welcome to your weekly update from Australia in Space.

This week we are joined by the Hon. Stephen Dawson MLC, the Western Australian Minister for Science to give a welcome to you to join us in Perth in just two short weeks for the Indo-Pacific Space and Earth Conference, 23-24 October at the Pan Pacific Hotel. Minister Dawson proudly highlights the significant space and advanced technology infrastructure and capabilities in the largest Australian state and operating in the same time-zone as 60 per cent of the planet.

Today, NASA announced its coverage of the upcoming prelaunch and launch activities later this week for its Psyche mission to a metal-rich asteroid. NASA is sending the spacecraft to an asteroid named Psyche, which orbits the Sun between Mars and Jupiter, to learn how Earth and other rocky planets formed. This will be the first mission to an asteroid with substantial amounts of metal, as previous missions have explored asteroids made mostly of rock or ice.

The asteroid Psyche may be part of the interior of a planetesimal, a building block of a rocky planet. By studying it, scientists seek to determine whether the asteroid was a planetary core.

Attached to the Psyche spacecraft is a technology demonstration, NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications. This experiment will test the ability of lasers to transmit data at increased rates beyond the Moon. High-bandwidth optical communications to Earth will be tested during the first two years of the spacecraft’s journey to Psyche. While the optical communications demonstration is hosted by Psyche, its transceiver will not relay Psyche mission data.

We’re looking forward to hearing more on this mission and others when senior NASA representatives visit Perth at the Indo-Pacific Space and Earth Conference. We’ll be joined by James Free, NASA Associate Administrator – Exploration Systems Development, David Korsmeyer, Deputy Center Director – NASA’s Ames Research Center,  Roger Hunter, Program Manager – Small Spacecraft Technology Program NASA and Dr Butler Hine, Program Manager – HelioSwarm, NASA. For the full program and tickets visit https://spaceandearthconference.com/

Enjoy the weekly update and have a brilliant Thursday.

Carbon Composite Technology to Reduce Satellite Mass

The next iLAuNCH Trailblazer project aims to reduce weight in satellites through the additive manufacturing of lightweight and thermally stable composite structures that will ultimately save on the cost to access space.

Teaming up with The Australian National University and industry partner New Frontier Technologies, this Trailblazer project will develop a material solution based on carbon fibre.

“This first Materials and Processing commercialisation project will develop protective coatings for carbon composite components that will be deployed in space environments for long durations,” said iLAuNCH Trailblazer Executive Director, Darin Lovett. “We are developing world-class sovereign manufacturing capability that is cost competitive and utilises the latest advancements in materials; vital for realising the full potential of an Australian space manufacturing industry.”

Satellite Technology to Solve Crimes Quicker

The WA Police Force is set to become the first law enforcement agency in the world to integrate low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology with its current communication network, giving officers high-speed internet anywhere in WA.

Making up one third of the continent, WA has one of the largest police jurisdictions in the world – and just 26 per cent of the State has mobile phone or radio coverage.

The $8.5 million upgrade will enable police operating in remote locations to instantly send and receive mission critical information, access automatic number plate recognition data and real-time emergency alerts.
